Night Soldiers by Stephen Furst

Just finished this novel. It’s mainly about espionage centered around the Balkans before and during World War II (with a long side trip to Spain during the civil war and France before and during the occupation). It’s really a masterpiece. Beautifully written from beginning to end, an encyclopedia of European culture around the fringes. I can’t wait to read his other books.
