Reporting for duty!

I’ve been working remotely since 2015. After we sold a startup to Dropbox, I had about six months off to chill and figure out what to do next. I took a playwriting class and got a lot of exercise. At the end of the period I joined another startup that was fully remote. I worked there for four years and then did some consulting work.

Soon after that the pandemic hit and I ended up doing volunteer work, also fully remote, and finally took a contract with California government to manage the state’s covid website. Then I was appointed to a position on that team by the governor and ultimately served as acting director of the service innovation team there for about a year before the governor’s return to office program started fully kicking in last January. I went to the Oakland office a few times but soon afterward I resigned and took a new fully remote position with the federal government.

That is all due to change March 3 (date subject to logistics and planning), when every GSA employee in the Bay Area is expected to show up at the federal building at 50 UN Plaza looking for a seat. Should be a big day!

In the meantime, there’s a civic tech meetup in the city this evening starting at 5pm at the Sycamore on Mission so I figured I’d practice my commute and ride CalTrain to 4th street today and then walk to the civic center and see what all this “return to office” hubub is about. Then at the end of the day I can grab a beer with a few of my colleagues and talk about the weather or something.
