We were all young once

I was surprised to see some younger-ish folks at the Dead show in Sunday. For me one of the highlights was having two functioning knees and being able to stand (and dance) all night.

It was a lot of fun! Yes, at times somewhat labored, but many great moments especialy in set the second set.

Set 1:
Good Times
China Cat Sunflower →
I Know Your Rider
They Love Each Other
Shakedown Street
Deal

Set 2:
Scarlet Begonias*
Fire on the Mountain
Broken Arrow **
Hell in a Bucket
Cumberland Blues*** →
drums → weirdness****
Standing on the Moon
Sugaree
Sugar Magnolia*****
Touch of Grey

* Trey Anastasio (from opening act) on Scarlet and Fire, full Scarlet jam to reprise, no transition, then Oteil Burbridge played the Fire bass riff and they were off
** Grahame Lesh on bass
*** Lesh and Burbridge both on bass
**** not much, mostly keyboards
***** no Sunshine Daydream

Highlights (for me, meaning usually the best jamming or playing) were:

  • They Love Each Other (first big jam)
  • Fire on the Mountain (Trey and Mayer locked in and pushed it higher
  • Broken Arrow (incredibly well played and interested tribute to Phil)
  • Sugaree (Mayer and Chimenti were both on fire)

“Good Times” is the old Sam Cooke song people call “Let the Good Times Roll” that the Dead broke out first at the Frost in 88 after some of them played it acoustically at the Marin Vets school benefit earlier that year.

Lately, it occurs to me….
