Meta-blogging

This article by Boing Boing co-editor Cory Doctorow is a great explanation of why I feel the need for a “personal expression platform” and what makes me want to get the mediajunkie project off the blocks. I’m reminded of the late ’80s when I encountered Negativland’s Escape from Noise album and then De La Soul’s Three Feet High and Rising. I realized that the “art” of sampling was giving these creators the ability to take the the flood of media streaming into their eyes and ears, recut it, remix it, and broadcast it back out again. Instead of feeling clogged by a one-way stream of stimuli, the musicians found a way to get a two-way dialogue going.
Similarly, the discomfort I feel with the way that the e-mail, press releases, online media, New York-based print journalism, and other info sources barraging my brain (willingly, sure) tend to pile up in a kind of “I need to tell someone this” backlog (klog?) has led me to this idea that I need to be able to take the media stream and respond to it rapidly. That is, delete items, pass them along through whatever channels of my own I develop, or (most rarely) save them for some kind of archival or private use.
