When I was a kid there was a fast-food chain on the east coast called Arthur Treacher’s Fish ‘n’ Chips. I seem to recall that Treacher was some kind of celebrity from long before my time. Whatever happened to that place? I can’t think of any other fast-food chains that have entirely disappeared since then. Did the fried-fish eating demographic just vanish? I still remember their jingle: “Arthur Treacher’s fish ‘n’ chips/Arthur Treacher’s fish ‘n’ chips/The meal you cannot make/The meal you cannot make/The meal you cannot make/At home.”

First the man. Treacher was a brit actor who came to America in 1928 in a musical theater revue. He began his film career in 1933, and is best known for his butler roles, including several Shirley Temple films, and a couple of Wodehouse movies, “Thank You, Jeeves” (1936) and “Step Lively, Jeeves” (1937). Also played a constable in Disney’s Mary Poppins (1964). Last seen as the acerbic sidekick of Merv Griffin on TV in the 60s.
Now the Fast Food Restaurant. According to their website, Arthur Treachers is still in business, and traces its origins to the 1860s, when a London restaurant called Malin’s of Bow began serving deep-fried whitefish with a dousing of malt vinegar accompanied by oversized fries. Arthur Treachers dates from the purchase, in 1969, of both Malin’s and the original fish and chips recipe. Capitalizing on the popularity of Treacher, the actor, the new owners of Malin’s bought the rights to his name and image and started franchising. And here we are today.
I was delighted to stumble across your blog and the reference to Arthur Treachers Fish & Chips. The main reason is that I’m in the middle of writing a one man comedy show based on my childhood as the geeky son of a tough guy Cowboy. It’s called ‘Saddle Sore’.

I am a sentimental fool. I loved Arthur Treachers located down there in Greenwood on state road 31 and it went out of business along the came years as did Ayre Way (sp?), Turnstyle (dept./drug store)and the Mike Douglas show. Does anyone remember the Bob Braun show or Burger Chef. Yes, I am from Indianapolis. So what.
Does anyone know the closes Arthur Treacher Restaurant in Maryland, DC, Virginia area? I remember going there as a kid but haven’t seen any for awhile. I have been going to the Long John Silver (which is similar) in Frederick, Maryland about 45 minutes away from my house.

Is there any Arthur Treachers in PA Or NJ?
I believe there is an Arthur Treacher’s Fish & Chips in Flint, Michigan….I saw it located near a hobby shop….had to try some of their fish….brought back some memories.

There’s an Arthur Treachers opening first week of June ’03 in the Aspen Hill area of Silver Spring. In the Del Mercado shopping center on Bel Pre road. (2200 Blk) Next door to McD’s – used to be a Taco Hell. 411 gave me their Ph# as 301-603-1600 but I’m not getting any answers yet.
I have fond memories of Arthur Treachers when it used to be downtown minneapolis right across the street from the old Zantigo restaurant on Hennipen. I went for the first time back in 79 at 6 years old when my mother took me to go see Xanadu with Olivia Newton John in it. Oh, the memories.
Wow, a whole site dedicated to Arthur Treachers fish & chips…or as my friends and I called it when I worked there “Arthur’s Treacherous Fish & Chips”, although i must admit the food was quite good. I think I made up for the low pay in the amount of free food I ate. I worked at one in Albany NY, but it has since gone out of business.

I was surprised to see that on the main website for Arthur Treacher’s ,www.arthurtreachers.com/ , it lists locations in Florida that closed in 1980!!!. I know because I worked in the Orlando market.The resturants on E. Colonial, W. Colonial, and Apopka Vineland,among others, closed over 22 years ago!!!

There was an Arthur Treacher’s restaurant in Middletown, OH back in the 1970’s that closed quite a long time ago. I remember the food as being quite good. I now live in Columbus, OH and there are three restaurants in this area now.
I used to LOVE Arthur Treacher’s fish and chips! They disappeared from Connecticut as far as I can see. Are there any in Conn.? I remember working at a gas station and the mixture of the fish and chips and the gas fumes made for a heavenly meal!!
This is an unhappy comment. I live and work in a Cleveland, Ohio suburb. I also like A.T’s, but now I am not sure! I visited the A.T’s on Northfield Road in Warrensville Heights Ohio, last week. I went thru the drive thru and just ordered a sandwich. With everybody’s busy life style today, I unwrapped the sandwich and started to eat it in the car. Wow, not only did I burn my mouth, but tartar sauce dripped every where. I pulled into a parking lot. They “Nuked” the frigging sandwich! I guess it sat around for an hour….and here I came. The Fish was soggy, the bun was hard, the cheese and tarter sauce slid around and out of the sandwich and it was so hot you could not eat it. The bun had enough room for two pieces of fish. When I was pulling thru the drive thru, I though what a bargain a $1.99 for a great fish sandwich! I know better, I should have returned it…made them make me a new sandwich and throw in a pop and some fries for my inconvenience. I would gladly pay $2.49 for an edible fish sandwich. One that takes up a good portion of the bun, a normal piece of cheese…not some imitation crap, perhaps a piece of lettuce and tarter on the side. Isn’t there a law on how long you can keep a sandwich in the holding bin? Perhaps, I will visit Long John Silvers instead. I will e mail you back with my experience. In the mean time I will avoid A.T’s and tell my co-workers and friends to do the same.

The Arthur Treachers in Hamilton, Ohio has suddenly closed, We would like to know why.And will there be anymore A.T.’S opening around the Cincinnati, Dayton OHIO area anytime soon?
Bring the Arthur Treacher’s restaurants back. They had the best fish in the world. There used to be one in Center City, Philadelphia, PA in the mall but it disappeared one day. The fish was fried but not greasy and seasoned to perfection.
I grew up on AT’s Chicken in the 70’s and loved it. Somewhere along the way they’ve changes the recipie of the chicken breading.
If anyone has a copy of a recipie for AT’s batter for chicken or Krunch Pups, (especially the older version) I’d love to have it!
I’m in NC now and there are a few of them in Raleigh, but they are merged with Miami Subs. It’s good to go there sometimes, but the chicken and the chips are totally different. Most places don’t have Krunch Pups either. :-(
